To thrive in a place like San Francisco requires a cultivation mindset, like the tilling of the soil so that good seed can take root and flourish.
Tillage is purpose-built to cultivate flourishing—a better way to work, create, connect, and thrive in San Francisco through healthy rhythms and rituals of intentional proximity. Together.
Helping you thrive right where you are.

Our connection to Place gives us a sense of rootedness and belonging.
And to belong to a place, we must cultivate our affection for it—both the place and its people.
“Most people now are looking for a better place, which means that a lot of them will end up in a worse one…There is no ‘better place’ than this, not in this world. And it is by the place we’ve got, and our love for it and our keeping of it, that this world is joined to Heaven….”
—Wendell Berry
Socrates said that "the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." Welcome wise one.
Tillage is built on a simple, big idea: San Francisco needs places embedded in her neighborhoods that allow her people to build deep connections—working, creating, cultivating, and ultimately thriving side-by-side—as we live and grow in this beautiful and broken city. Like a little kid asking their parent where babies come from, that answer might be more than you asked for. But if you’re going to be a Tillage member, we want your buy-in.
That is a deep, deep question. The first step is to join The Membership, but the answer to “How do I become a member?” is so much deeper. One of our favorite authors is Wendell Berry, and he wrote that “a community is the mental and spiritual connection of knowing that a place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other’s lives.” How do you become a member? That’ll take a lifetime to answer. But we’d love to do that with you.
Nope; but we do offer two membership options to fit your needs. If you really, really want to be a part of Tillage but don’t find either of the membership options are a fit, let’s chat; I bet we can figure out a way for you to be here. Write us at hello@tillage.place.
Is the sky blue? We have a phenomenal partnership with Saint Frank Coffee to provide single-cup fresh-brewed coffee. Endless. Bountiful. Free. (Please drink responsibly.) If you want something fancier, our friends at Saint Frank are opening a new cafe a few blocks over. Grab a cortado (our favorite) and support their growth and mission in The City. We also have a selection of teas and cold beverages for those who don’t like to live life on the jittery side.
Nope. We do not have private offices or dedicated desks. Tillage is a place for work, yes, and also, reading, writing, thinking, connecting, and community gatherings. Being embedded in your neighborhood means Tillage is a place to use more frequently in shorter bursts throughout your week.
Please and thank you!! Members are welcome to bring guests anytime they are present; please don't lose your guest. And, like your mom, if we notice you're bringing a guest around a lot (like, a lot), we might start asking nosy questions like, when are you going to make things official? We mean membership! What did you think we were talking about?
Many are. We started Tillage to build an ecosystem for thriving in San Francisco. Our events aren’t for networking or thinly veiled corporate sponsorship opportunities. They are purpose-built to help our members cultivate deep and healthy relationships. Check out our full events calendar to see which events are open to the public and which are for members only.
Up until our official opening date, your membership deposit is fully refundable. After opening, if you need to cancel your membership, you can do so at any time. Your membership will remain active until the end of the subscription period you purchased, monthly or annual. Refunds are only granted under extraordinary circumstances; reach out if you think that applies to you.
